Outfoxing their enemies will be a bear of a task.

Aspiring journalist and fox shifter David ends up with a target on his back after hacking the Moreau Initiative, the shifter world’s greatest enemy. But he won’t let that stop him from the campus tour road trip that’ll help him become the next Anderson Cooper… even if his family insists he travel with a grumpy grizzly bear bodyguard.

Buddy Brady is older, sexy, and too damn distracting for David, and as the sexual tension builds, so does the suspicion around the repeated attacks--first in Chicago, then in New York. Someone is tracking them, and all clues point to a traitor in the shifter ranks. Worst of all, they could be after David’s family....

Review

David has lived in the shadow of his perfect brother and domineering mother all his life. Becoming a great journalist was his passion and his chance to prove to his family that he wasn’t just a screw-up who seemed to constantly get in trouble despite his best intentions. So it’s no surprise to anyone that David accidentally hacks into the mysterious Moreau Initiative while trying to help a friend track down his adoption records. The Initiative has been responsible for kidnapping shifter children and using them for experimentation—just how deep the organization runs is anyone’s guess but now David has put a target on his back and there are consequences he is not going to be happy about.

When David’s mother informs him he will have a bodyguard accompany him on his college interviews, David is frustrated and angry. When he meets the hulking bear shifter, Buddy (Theo) Brady, David must fight back an almost immediate attraction. He may be a little fox but his emotions run big and Buddy ticks every one of his boxes. Unfortunately Buddy is all business especially as one assailant after another happens to find David and puts him in increasingly dangerous circumstances. But David is determined to ignore the mounting evidence he is in danger and instead make the bear notice him and despite the crazy run the two men are on, the sexual tension explodes before long. Now both of them would like to explore just how deep their attraction runs but they have discovered there is a traitor in the shifter council and it may spell death for David and Buddy if they can’t figure out how to expose the person and stop their plans.

I think this Shifter U. series by J. Leigh Bailey just gets better and better. With the fourth book, Fox Hunt, just released, we once again return to the paranormal community in Cody, Wyoming and spend time with some new and some very familiar characters. I really enjoyed the pairing of the gruff and aloof Buddy and the flightier, determined David. David was very self-aware—on the cusp of really accepting that perhaps he had been wrong about his “perfect” brother and how that made him feel so inadequate. I liked how Buddy gradually opened up to David, going as far as revealing that all his life he had done what was expected of him and not necessarily what he wanted—from allowing others to call him Buddy and not by his given name, Theo, to running a cafĂ© that he had no passion for at all. These two really were perfect for each other—Buddy helping David come to terms with his misconceptions about his family and his tendency to doubt himself and David showing buddy that it was time to start living for himself and creating a life he wanted as opposed to one that others forced upon him.

In the mix of this delightful romance was a mystery element that kept one guessing and the action moving non-stop. I do wish the author had been able to give a bit more background on the Moreau Initiative and exactly how widespread its influence was but I am guessing we may hear more about them in future novels. I also felt the mole in the shifter council was a bit underdeveloped—it would have been great to get more of their background and what caused them to be so willing to betray the shifter community. However, despite these limited plot points, the story was really quite good and the action was more than enough to keep this reader on their toes.

Fox Hunt is a sweet romance and another exciting view into the shifter world created by author J. Leigh Bailey. It is a great addition to the other books in the series and has certainly done its job in keeping me invested in watching for future installments of the series.

Synopsis

A Shifter U Tale

Long nights lead to intrigue… and infatuation.

Chronically ill with a mysterious condition, Yusuf “Joey” Franke escapes his smothering family and doctors by moving halfway across the country to enroll in Cody College. Not long after arriving on campus, some of his symptoms disappear, only to be replaced by debilitating insomnia. Joey spends his nights wandering the halls of his dormitory and hanging out with gregarious and affable Owen, who works the night shift.

When he suddenly shifts from a sick college kid to a massive Asiatic lion, Joey discovers another side to Cody College—it’s a haven for shifters like himself… and like Owen, a part-time great horned owl. And being a shifter is hereditary, which means his parents have some explaining to do.

When Joey and Owen investigate, they discover more than they bargained for—a family deception, a dangerous enemy with international connections, and a love that might be too new to survive the backlash.

Review

When ‘Yusuf’ Joey is wandering the halls at night he sees Owen who works the night shift. They start a game of chess. He could never imagine starting a new life at Cody College would change his so completely.
From a young age Joey was always sick and his parents paid a fortune in medical bills.
Living this new life is doing him good minus his new developed insomnia. Then one night he shifts into a massive Asiatic lion... he doesn’t know what happens to him. Owen doesn't seem surprised at all...

His whole life becomes an uncertainty. Who is he and why didn’t his parents tell him?
With Owen on his side, they start an investigation. Nothing seems as it is.

A lovely new adult shifter story I really enjoyed reading. The mystery throughout is well done. The growing love between Joey and Owen was so nice to watch. The subdued possessive side of Joey was somewhat funny. The plot was really well done. I love the whole package of lions, owls, friendship, family secrets, and the bit of angst.
I read it in one sitting because it provided just what I wanted and I had to know the outcome.
In short; a good written somewhat sweet, slightly different shifter story.

Synopsis

Seventeen-year-old Connor works his butt off to maintain the golden-boy persona he’s created. He has the grades, the extracurriculars, the athletics, and a part-time job at his dad’s shop… every detail specifically chosen to ensure the college scholarships he needs to get the hell out of the Podunk town where he lives. The last thing he needs is an unexpected attraction to Graham, an eyeliner-wearing soccer phenom from St. Louis, who makes him question his goals and his sexuality. Sure, he’s noticed good-looking boys before—that doesn’t have to mean anything, right?—but he’s got a girlfriend. There’s no room on the agenda for hooking up with Graham, but the heart doesn’t always follow the rules.

As he and Graham grow close, other aspects of Connor’s life fall apart. Family pressure, bad luck, and rumors threaten to derail his carefully laid plans. Suddenly the future he’s fighting for doesn’t seem quite as alluring, especially if he has to deny who he really is to achieve it.

Review

I have had Guyliner by J. Leigh Bailey on my wish list for months now! I saw it on a 2016 Books with LGBT themes list on GR and immediately marked it as a must read, so to say I was excited to get this book is an understatement. I am so happy to tell you all that I enjoyed it every bit as much as I hoped I would! Connor and Graham's story was sweet and tender and emotional, a bit sad in some parts, and all fantastic. I just adore coming of age stories so much and Guyliner is one of the reasons why. All the self-discovery and acceptance done by both characters was endearing and heartfelt.

Graham Parker is new to town and boy does he ever turn Connor Fitzpatrick's world upside down in a hurry. Eyeliner wearing, sarcastic t-shirt wearing, soccer phenom Graham is everything Connor wishes for, but is too afraid to want. Graham and his family have moved to town after a brutal attack on Graham leaves him beaten and bruised. But not broken. Because Graham is boldly out of the closet, almost daringly so. He doesn't hide who he is and challenges anyone to making him afraid to be who he is. This conflict, the inner struggles Connor goes through as he tries to accept himself was heartbreaking and felt so real. I loved the way Bailey let this play out. It's not so full of angst that you want to cry, but it's done in such a way that feels authentic and genuine. The Golden Boy and the Bad Boy isn't anything we haven't seen before but Graham and Connor are so endearing you can't help but root for these guys to figure out how to be together. It isn't easy; Connor's battle to be who he wants in the face of immense pressure (both imagined and real) is something that all teenagers go through, straight, gay, or in between.

There needs to be more YA books like this out in the world. The issues dealt with aren't trite and clichĂ©d—they're real. I loved how Connor's family was so accepting, even if it took a bit of time. I liked how J. Leigh Bailey addressed that "coming out" doesn't only affect the one doing it, but the parents, siblings, and friends of the person, too. Especially in a small town where your dad owns an auto shop and the family's income might be affected by people not quite so accepting or worrying about how your brothers and sisters will be treated by their friends. This is a real struggle, it's a real worry and shouldn't be easily dismissed. It's easy to read a book and go "just come out already, what are you waiting for" but worrying about the consequences of doing so is a genuine and often very difficult process. I really liked how this isn't an overly heavy book. Although there are some hard topics discussed, there is such a feeling of hope and joy that is at play—even during the hard times. This book isn't preachy or in your face, it's the coming of age story of two boys just trying to figure out who they are and how to be happy.

The secondary characters—best friend Marc, girlfriend Allyson, sister Becca, Connor's mom and even his dad, Graham's parents—all these people added so much to the story. It was so NICE to see supportive families and friends portrayed in a book like this. It doesn't happen often enough. There are lots of things at play in Guyliner—a middle income family struggling to provide a college education on a limited budget, bullying, the pressure on teenagers to perform to a high standard in order to catch a break, family dynamics, and more that make this a book you can't miss. Great characters, a tightly woven plot with nice pacing, sharp writing, and a very satisfying HFN that will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy with a smile on your face. Don't miss this one, people!
