Synopsis

For fourteen-year-old Jacob Thomas, a Christian and the smartest kid in class, Bobby Versailles is completely out of reach. Jacob wishes a girl named Allie loved him because he still doesn’t get that he’s gay, but he always keeps his eyes peeled at school, hoping to catch a glimpse of Bobby.

It’s Bobby Versailles’s senior year. Captain of his high school football team, he’s bound to win Homecoming King and hopefully a state championship, but he’s been miserable for years. His fear of somebody finding out he’s gay has brought isolation and loneliness. He has hidden that he’s gay by going on dates with girls now and then, and also by working out and excelling at football—which has also helped teachers look past his learning difficulties. When he first eyes Jacob, it’s possibly love at first sight. Bobby becomes a little obsessed. Jacob has got to be gay, and when Bobby makes a move, both of their worlds turn upside down!

It’s 1982, and while the Nebraska Cornhuskers are barreling toward a possible NCAA National Football Championship, everyone in a small town two hours away hopes Bobby can lead them to a state championship. Can two teens with vastly different lives find love amidst the fervor of Nebraska football?

Review

Rhett Heath tells a remarkable story that is set in the early 80's about two high school boys living in a small Christian town that are trying to figure out a way to be together. What really intrigued me that this story was based on actual events.

As this story unfolds it takes you to the year 1982, where you have the all star football player that is trying to take his team all the way in his senior year. Bobby Versailles, is suppose to be this popular kid that has it all. It seems like the more we perceive of what one has, the less we really know what the actually may want.

Jate, a freshman, who comes from a strict Christian family prays every night for some girl to love him cause he is so convinced that this is what he should want. Although, his attraction seems to be towards the super hot football player.

This story  had me wanting to cry for these characters cause I felt that these teenagers were so afraid to be who they wanted to be in fear of being prosecuted. It is shown throughout the story after a former student had killed himself.

However, Bobby and Jate made me laugh and smile with their sweet teenage love. I learned what love was like for two teenage boys growing up in a small town in 1982.
