I am always so pleased when I pick up a book by a new to me author
and fall madly in love with their writing style and story telling
ability. I've never read anything by L.M. Somerton, but after reading Owned by the Sea,
I most definitely will be checking out more of her books! Low on angst,
with characters I really liked, and a setting that is worthy of a post
card or a made for TV movie, Owned by the Sea was just the book I needed to get me out of a book funk.
From the blurb, you'd think Owned by the Sea
might be a bit on the depressing side. After all Jonty Trelawn loses
his entire family to a storm while out at sea and is rescued just in
time so he doesn't suffer the same fate. A year later and Jonty is
struggling to move past the tragedy. As an artist, he's an introvert and
has turned into a bit of recluse as he tries to paint his anger and
sadness ... and loneliness away. He gets the idea to hold an art
auction and include some of the local artists as a way to thank the
local lifeboat station that saved his life. Jonty finds himself at
Kelly's Pub one night as he starts to make plans and crosses paths with
Jed Curnow, a local carpenter who also, unbeknownst to Jonty, is the one
who rescued Jonty from the ravaging sea all those months ago. Jonty
isn't the most self-confident of guys, and Jed's size and charismatic
personality is completely opposite from him, but Jonty can't help but be
intrigued ... and attracted to Jed. For his part, Jed hasn't been able
to forget the white-blond haired man he rescued and hopes helping Jonty
with the auction will let them get to know one another. Jed's dominant
personality calls to Jonty and Jed can't resist the innate submission he
feels from Jonty.
The BDSM in Owned by the Sea
is on the very light side, just enough to spice things up a little bit
but it's not the sole focus of the book in any way. This book is more
about hope and finding your way after a tragedy. Jonty and Jed are so
wonderful together. Jonty is quirky and adorable and flighty and the
loss of his family has affected not only the way he looks at the world
now, but his art as well. Jed gives him the space and the support to
navigate his new world while offering direction he desperately needs to
feel safe once more. There are some pretty swoony moments between these
two. I have to say though, every scene Marmite--Jed's rambunctious and
lovable Newfoundland--is in, he completely steals the show. I adored him
and the thing I really liked so much is that the dog isn't there merely
for cute points, he plays a pivotal role in Jonty's healing. The art
aspect was fascinating, and I've gotta say the local artisans are super
talented! I really enjoyed the secondary character's as well-Kelly,
Shaw, and Steve to name a few.
I'm so glad I
picked up this book. Yeah, it was a little sugary sweet at times but the
characters are so lovely that I didn't mind. The setting is
breathtaking, a character in and of itself, and I would absolutely love
to visit a village like Polruthan someday! I would love to see more from
these characters so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Owned by the Sea is the first book of a series ... a girl can dream any way! Check this one out, y'all, you won't be sorry if you do!
