Synopsis

Victoria “Vix” Vincent has only two weeks to find a replacement fiddle player for her band’s summer tour. When classically trained violinist Sawyer Bell shows up for an audition, Vix is thrilled. Sawyer is talented, gorgeous, funny, and excited about playing indie rock instead of Beethoven. Their friendship soon blossoms into romance, even though Vix tries to remember that Sawyer’s presence is only temporary.

Sawyer’s parents think she’s spending the summer months touring Europe with a chamber ensemble. But Sawyer is in dire need of a break from the competitiveness of Juilliard, and desperately wants to rediscover her love of music. Going on tour with her secret high school crush is just an added bonus. Especially when Vix kisses her one night after a show, and they discover that the stage isn’t the only place they have chemistry.

But the tour won’t last forever, and as the summer winds down, Sawyer has to make a tough decision about her future—and what it means to follow her heart.

Review

Avon Gale is by far one of my most favorite authors. Everything she has written, either by herself or with a collaborator, has been sheer brilliance. Witty and sarcastic, with fulfilling happily ever afters--her books just always tick all of my buttons and leave me satisfied and happy. Her newest book, The Love Song of Sawyer Bell, is no different. While I'll admit that an F/F romance isn't usually my go-to type of book, I'll read anything Avon writes, and I was not in the least bit disappointed. Her characters were wonderful, the dialogue was sharp and has that trademark bite coupled with humor that no one does as well as she does. The music, the atmosphere, the feelings ... the whole story completely captivated me from the very first page.

When Julliard trained violinist Sawyer Bell shows up to audition for Victoria "Vix" Vincent and her band to be their new fiddle player, she's not exactly sure what she's hoping for ...to fall in love with music again, sure, but she absolutely didn't plan to fall in love or spend the summer discovering who she really is. Sawyer blows the band away with her talent and they offer her the job for their summer tour. In typical Avon Gale style, Sawyer is a complex mixture of fierce and vulnerable full of snark and sass. She clicks with Vix right away; not surprising since Vix made an impression on a younger Sawyer when they were in high school. Their meeting was brief, but Sawyer has never forgotten the brash and bold Vix or the words they shared. It definitely doesn't take long at all for Sawyer to connect with music once again, something she was afraid wouldn't happen after the stress and unhappiness of being at Julliard for the past three years. She feels a freedom she's never felt before, both musically and sexually.

For her part, Vix is more than happy to show Sawyer the ropes so to speak on her sexual journey. As a strong bisexual woman, Vix owns her sexuality and her pleasure and isn't afraid to go after what she wants. I absolutely loved how Gale wrote Vix and Sawyer's relationship. There is a super strong friendship before the sex starts, and they've shared secrets and late night talks and really gotten to know one another. The more time Sawyer spends with Vix, the more self-aware she becomes and really starts to take a look at her life and her wants and her dreams. Their connection is so strong, so realistic that it all just works. Even the missteps and the mistakes, the flares of jealousy and misunderstandings, all felt very authentic to both characters.

Music plays a central part of the overall story and Gale's knowledge and love of music shines through. No one could ever say she fakes her way around a story line; her subjects are near and dear to her heart. As we've come to love and expect there are sizzling hot sex scenes that are filled with her usual tenderness, snark, and humor. The band members were all awesome--I especially really liked Jeff. And let's not forget Sawyer's parents or fellow musician, Jax, who I'm really hoping to see more of! Really, The Love Song of Sawyer Bell is such a terrific book. Low angst, high emotion, sweet and sexy ... it has it all. Make sure y'all check this one out, you'll be sorry if you don't!

About the Author

Avon grew up in the southern United States, and now lives with her very patient husband in a liberal Midwestern college town. When she’s not writing, she’s either doing some kind of craft project that makes a huge mess, reading, watching horror movies, listening to music or yelling at her favorite hockey team to get it together, already. Avon is always up for a road trip, adores Kentucky bourbon, thinks nothing is as stress relieving as a good rock concert, and will never say no to candy.

At one point, Avon was the mayor of both Jazzercise and Lollicup on Foursquare. This tells you basically all you need to know about her as a person.
