What does this genre mean to me?

This community means learning. I have learned so very much from my friends in this community. I feel I’ve come to understand much more about myself both as a writer and as a person.
This community means friendship. Friendship with authors, readers, bloggers.
To me, this community means strength and perseverance. It’s a perfect example of “knock me down, I’ll get back up.”
Unity is a cornerstone of this community. All of us, together, with our different experiences, have joined together to stand for what is right. And we will keep standing together.
This community is important in so many ways, and I feel lucky I can be a part of it.

What does this genre mean to me?

People came for the queer and stayed for the folk" That's me in a nutshell. I discovered the m/m genre via the QAF fandom. The groundbreaking show opened my eyes to the daily struggles of same-sex couples throughout the world. Love should have no boundaries and I try to be a staunch ally by writing stories that are diverse and inclusive with guaranteed happy endings.

What does this genre mean to me?

I have a very personal reason for writing in this genre. My cousin died of AIDS in the late 1980's.  He was kind, funny and extremely intelligent...like rocket scientist smart.  His partner was with him until the end. There is more to Danny's story, but suffice to say writing romance in this genre is my way of acknowledging that love is love. The wonderful writers and faithful readers in this community allow me the opportunity to express what is in my heart.

What does this genre mean to me?

Queer romance has always been a place for people to explore and learn all those things most of society says isn’t normal, to learn more about the world and ourselves in ways we can’t anywhere else.

What does this genre mean to me?

I don’t exclusively write LGBT, it’s just part of what I do. But I really enjoy it. I’ve had some really great responses and feedback for my books, and the authors, bloggers, readers and others in the community are amongst the nicest people I know. They’re always happy to help out, lend an encouraging word, and it’s inspiring to see how so many of these people are determined to cancel out hate with love. What more can I say, really? It’s amazing.

What does this genre mean to me?

To me the queer romance genre is nothing less than a radical revolution in the way romance readers think about love and relationships. The importance of fiction in redefining what is “true” or what is “normal” or even what is “beautiful” cannot be overstated. Keep loving! And keep fighting!

What does this genre mean to me?

I remember the first time I found an M/M group online, the sense I had of coming home. Thirty-five years after reading The Persian Boy and The Front Runner – thirty-five years after scribbling my first love story where two men got their happy ending – I'd found a place where everyone, from straight folk like me to people across the LGBTQ-rainbow, came together to honor and celebrate love and relationships of all kinds.
From my first GayRomLit, I've been drawn out of my introvert corner, welcomed by a growing, enthusiastic community. The books I love, and even some I write, feel like part of something larger. Fun, pleasure, and comfort to us as readers, yes. (As a life-long sidelines watcher, I adore being part of something fun.) But also reaching out – imperfectly, sometimes too narrowly, not without squabbles and insensitivities – but with hope, toward a future where love is love.

What does this genre mean to me?

Last month I was chatting to another author in our genre and we both agreed that the best thing we get from writing (more than the sales and the money) is the friendships we’ve made and the experiences we’ve had. I’ve made connections that have lasted, and will last, for years. I’ve learned more from other people than I’d ever have learned from a book or a blog. I’ve shared so many hugs and laughs and good times at author/reader events. And some tears, too, but that’s cool because we’re here to support each other, aren’t we?

What does this genre mean to me?

I’m sincerely grateful for the friendships I’ve made with readers and authors within the m/m community over the past six years. I’ve been astounded by the support and concern offered by so many and it’s been a joy to meet some of you face to face.
Anyone who follows me on social media will know I frequently post pictures labelled Kiss of the Day and with Love is Love or Love Wins. Why? Because I firmly believe love is love regardless of race, gender, sexuality, religion, ability, or age. I want to help build a better, kinder, and more compassionate world. A world where you are not judged or discriminated against because of the person you love. Belonging to a caring writing community helps to spread this love and belief in equality for all.

What does this genre mean to me?

Being involved with the LGBTQ community gives me such joy. I love creating stories about two people who love, need and respect each other, no matter their sexuality. It is an honor to create such inclusion that can be shared around the community and to bring people, straight, gay, bi, transgender, together as one.

  4. It's really helped me sympathize with men, since it presents so many varied male characters (not just the control-freak alpha males so prevalent in het romance), and enjoy the story arcs of scores of lovable characters!

  6. I love the m/m genre because I love the happy endings. For way too many of my friends, their happy endings never came. Small towns and small minds hurt them so much.

  10. from a romance point of view I like the dynamics of the MM genre, the HEA and how they get there. The community despite occasional drama shows solidarity, heart, and support not often seen in the F/M genre.

  14. I've always loved romance novels and about 2 years ago I discovered M/M (through fanfiction). I love how the dynamics are so different, how there are no assumed roles, the power is much more balanced. And what I really love is the male vulnerability that is so often hidden in straight males.

  15. I like how inclusive the genre is and many authors are willing to take risks and write about topics that are not well represented otherwise. I also love how much authors interact with their readers. And the wonderful blogs that promote the books and provide other interesting posts. :-)

  16. I've been loving all the answers that the authors have given. I love the genre for its inclusivity as well as for its diversity. I think that this blog pays attention to that and love how it helps promote books and authors I might otherwise not have heard of.

  17. It's shown me that love is love and to be more open. Even in RL, seeing as my daughter just came out to me as bisexual, it's helped me to be able to guide her better.
