A man without memories, and the cop who never gave up hope.

When he wakes up in hospital, the victim of a brutal beating, John Doe, has no memories of who he is or who hurt him. The cops can find nothing to identify him and he can't remember anything to help... except the name Ethan and one recurring place from his dreams. Three words, and they're not much, but it's a start. Crooked Tree Ranch.

Cop, Ethan Allens has never stopped searching for his brother and his brother's best friend who vanished. When a report lands on Ethan's desk that may give new leads he jumps at the chance to follow them up. The man he finds isn't his brother, but it's someone who could maybe help him discover what happened ten years ago.

What neither man can know is that facing the very real demons of the past could very well destroy any kind of future they may think they have together.

Review

One of the things I like about stories like this is the slow build not just in the romance storyline but the overall storyline. There’s a sense of anticipation the whole time reading this when Adam learns who he is. Is this when Ethan finds out what happened to his brother? Will that new memory for Adam open up the door to the past and the answers he wants? I think that how the author put in the small details of one scent memory here, one “feeling” memory there, and some solid, but obscure, childhood memory was perfect for not just the story as a whole, but the love story as well. This gave the time that Adam and Ethan needed to reconnect not with their past but who they are now, even if Adam isn’t quite sure who that is for himself.

Adam was gentle but fierce throughout this story. He knew nothing of who he was but was determined to move forward and push through. When he got irritated and snappish at people for always asking him “Does this make you remember anything?” I felt that irritation with him. When Ethan felt lost and in his weak moments doubting his search for his brother; I felt those emotions with him. This is no way an extremely angsty book, in my opinion, but it is tense and stressful but those are also the things that kept me reading. Amnesia stories are like mysteries with small clues and hints dropped except much harder, if done right, to figure out. I think RJ Scott did that fantastically in this story and I am in awe of that because I always find reading mysteries great but rarely find someone who can truly write a mystery storyline without being able to say “I know who did it!” by mid-point in the book.

Her descriptions of the ranch and the land they explored with Adam in hopes of jogging his memory was awesome. Whether the sounds or smells or sights her words transport you to that spot with the characters. I loved the conflict Ethan struggled with when it came to Adam. As the one that remembered the past and who Adam was and the fact that he felt he carried the responsibility to Adam’s care made his feelings for him all the more difficult for him to grab hold of or act on. I liked that. I liked that it wasn’t just about these “feelings” that the two men had for each other. It was more. It was Adam’s uncertainty in those feelings or his moments of feeling like Ethan really would have rather have his brother, or Ethan’s worry that Adam had someone else out there neither knew about.

There were so many little things that put together this story that made it great for me, things I could point out that I loved about these two men or the story, but really the overall package that this author delivered was perfect! I can’t wait to get the book 3 A Cowboy’s Home with Justin and Sam!
