RJ Scott - Kyle (Legacy #1)

Author: RJ Scott

Release Date: September 2 2016

Length:

Blurb:

Two men destroyed by the past learn to live—and love—again.
Kyle Braden has nowhere else to go. With no money, no prospects, and no drive to be something else, he turns to the only man who promises him help. Jack Campbell-Hayes wants to show Kyle that he can be more than he ever thought.

Kyle gets to realize just how far he’s come from being the scarred man who shut everyone out, when the first person through the doors of Legacy Ranch carries a gun and threatens to kill anyone who comes near him. Kyle wants to be the man that someone turns to for help and it scares him.

Thrown out of his house and with three years on the streets marking every inch of his body, Jason Smith is scared. His life is an evil mess of hate and despair, and even the offer of a fresh start and a clean bed isn’t enough for him to hand over his gun. He’s cheated death twice, and he’s not letting there be a third time—he might not be so lucky.

For these broken men, Legacy Ranch offers more than a place to live and work.

It offers hope.

A new story set in the world of Jack and Riley Campbell-Hayes and the Double D Ranch, Texas.

Review

As a HUGE fan of RJ Scott's incredible Texas series, I was more than a teeny bit excited for this spin-off series of books to start! Like I legit squealed and did clappy hands. Right in front of RJ because she told me about this at GRL last year. So needless to say, I've been very anxiously awaiting the release of Kyle, and I can say it was everything I expected it to be! Sigh worthy often, a little sad, a lot hopeful, and with appearances by Jack and Riley and some of the others at the Double D Ranch, it was so nice to go back to Texas and see all these incredible characters again. Like going home.

Kyle, as readers of the Texas series will remember, has been abused badly and has been on the ranch for a while. When Jack asks Kyle to head up Legacy Ranch, a separate place set up as a place for people in need, Kyle can't refuse, though he's wary of what exactly his role is ... and what he has to do in order to stay. Jack earns Kyle's trust slowly and during that time, we can see just how damaged Kyle is. All he wants to do is work and be with his horses and all is going fine until Jason shows up. He's damaged, too, though not quite as severely or as deeply as Kyle and after a VERY rocky beginning, these two begin to heal each other and themselves.

This is a very slow burn and quiet story. But it fits the story line and these two characters so perfectly. Jason is more outgoing. He's loud and in your face, but really that's just to hide his pain. Kyle is the epitome of the strong silent type, only speaking when absolutely necessary and even then it's in as few of words as possible. The moments when Jason and Kyle open up to one another are achingly sweet and tender and so emotional. This makes their conversations that much more heartbreaking and authentic. These two guys are damaged. There's no magical fix for them, not even when they realize how much they love one another, and I especially appreciated that aspect. They learn to trust and to open up, but it's in small steps, and there are setbacks. All this leaves the reader with such a tremendous amount of hope for Jason and Kyle.

As always with an RJ Scott book, the writing is beautifully done. The dialog is real and full of both humor and snark, and lots of emotion as well. The interactions between Kyle and Jack were as sweet as they were awkward and Kyle's much needed closure with Darren was especially welcome and done so well. I am so excited to see what else happens in this series and anxiously await the next book!
