Synopsis

Two-time ex-con Camden Sanders has decided that Hog Mountain—an isolated community on the outskirts of Atlanta, Georgia—is the perfect place to continue running small scams without the threat of more prison time. But there are a few problems with this plan. One is the neighborly citizens of Hog Mountain thwarting his dirty dealings at every turn with their kindness. Another is Jackson Rhodes, a closeted Hog Mountain police officer who can see right through Cam’s good ol’ boy act and plans to catch him red-handed despite the attraction they both can feel. But the biggest problem of all is that Cam’s past is threatening to catch up with him, and it could mean trouble for more than just himself.

Review

First things first, can we talk about how fabulous the cover of this book is please?! I didn’t even know what this book was about and it was already on my must read list from this gorgeous cover alone. I’m a HUGE sucker for an eye catching cover and this one definitely piqued my interest immediately. As if the cover alone wasn’t enough to hook me, then the blurb surely did it. An anti-hero, a hometown boy police officer, and small town in the south? Oh yeah baby, I was so there.

I’m always on the lookout for a new author to enjoy, and Snakes Among Sweet Flowers made sure Jason Huffman-Black will be on my list of author’s to watch out for.

Camden Sanders isn’t a particularly nice guy. At least not at first. He’s conniving, a bit shallow, definitely greedy, and really, just kind of a jerk. He’s only concerned with one thing, one person, and that’s himself and whatever he can con or steal or use from somebody else. Not such great qualities, yeah? And then we have police officer Jackson Rhodes. Closeted police officer, that is. And boy does he ever have Cam’s number right from the get go. There is NO love lost between these two when they first meet, and that sure does make for some might fine sexual tension.

I liked the premise of this story and I really enjoyed the setting. The inhabitants of Hog Mountain, Georgia were as entertaining as they were likable (well, the ones we’re supposed to like that is.) The relationship that develops between Cam and Jackson was fun to watch grow from outright distrust and suspicion into something much deeper. There’s some humor, some hot sex, and there’s enough drama that kept me interested. The book does move a bit slow at times, and while the writing is very well-done, it’s certainly straightforward and not prone to much embellishment. There’s not a whole lot of romance going on either between Cam and Jackson. Not a lot of passion between these two for sure, but it was very nice seeing the changes in Cam as he learns to accept himself and his place in the world.

I’ll definitely be keeping Jason Huffman-Black on my radar and look forward to seeing what he does next.
